There are some weddings that leave a lasting impression, not because of extravagant details alone, but because of the genuine love, laughter and emotion shared throughout the day. Lorna & Stuart’s wonderful wedding at The Royle Forest Wedding Venue in Staffordshire was exactly that – a celebration overflowing with happiness, heartfelt moments and the coming together of two incredible families in one of Staffordshire’s most beautiful wedding venues.
From the moment I arrived for the relaxed bridal preparations, there was an unmistakable feeling of excitement. Lorna had thought of absolutely everything, with every detail carefully chosen to create a truly personal celebration. It was a pleasure to photograph these finishing touches before the day unfolded naturally around them.

Working alongside experienced venue coordinators makes an enormous difference, allowing the entire day to flow effortlessly while ensuring the couple remain completely relaxed and able to enjoy every moment.
The ceremony itself was incredibly emotional. Lorna made a stunning entrance before exchanging heartfelt vows with Stuart, whose calm and composed demeanour perhaps hid the emotions he was feeling inside. One particularly moving moment came during a beautiful song dedicated to Lorna’s mother. There genuinely wasn’t a dry eye in the room, and these are exactly the moments that deserve to be remembered forever.
Following a spectacular confetti exit surrounded by family and friends, guests enjoyed drinks and canapés while we seamlessly moved through the requested family photographs. One of the questions I am asked most often by couples planning their wedding is how I balance organising the essential photographs whilst still capturing the genuine story of the day.
The answer lies in experience.
After photographing weddings for many years, I’ve learnt that great wedding photography isn’t about constantly directing people or becoming the centre of attention. It’s about quietly observing, anticipating genuine moments before they happen and knowing exactly when to step in and when to simply let the day unfold naturally.
Every wedding includes those important “must-have” photographs, family groups, bridal party portraits and couple photographs, these are always carefully organised to keep everything running smoothly. However, equally important are the unscripted moments that cannot be recreated: parents wiping away tears, spontaneous laughter between friends, children playing in the background, warm embraces, knowing glances and those fleeting expressions that often become the photographs couples treasure the most.
Many of my Google reviews mention that couples and guests hardly realised I was there throughout much of the day. For me, there really isn’t a greater compliment. It means I’ve successfully documented the real story without interrupting it.
Throughout Lorna & Stuart’s wedding I worked closely alongside the venue team and fellow wedding suppliers, everyone worked together with one shared goal giving the couple the most relaxed and enjoyable wedding day possible. Good communication behind the scenes creates a seamless experience, allowing couples to remain completely immersed in celebrating with the people they love.
One aspect of my approach that couples particularly appreciate is the amount of time they’re away from their guests. Rather than spending hours posing, we took advantage of the stunning woodland surroundings and beautiful backdrops The Royle Forest offers by spending around twenty minutes together shortly after the ceremony, followed by a relaxed fifteen-minute portrait session after the wedding breakfast as the light softened. In less than thirty-five minutes across the entire day, we created a beautiful collection of elegant portraits while ensuring Lorna and Stuart spent the vast majority of their wedding celebrating with their nearest and dearest.
This balance is at the heart of my documentary wedding photography style.
